Why Emily Blunt & John Krasinski Almost Didn’t Make A Quiet Place Sequel

Just before Covid hit hard last year, Emily Blunt was set to spend a huge summer in the north.

The star of A Quiet Place, Part II was being promoted for the sequel to the original blockbuster when the film’s director, her husband, John Krasinski, announced the postponement of the film’s release. It was March 12, 2020, just before the entire United States shut down.

Suddenly forced into quarantine, Blunt began to read books and scripts. She home-schooled her two children, then aged 3 and 6. She had guest spots in family members’ quarantine plans, including Krasinski’s Some good news and the viral cocktail tutorials from brother-in-law Stanley Tucci on Instagram.

Now, over a year later, she’s back in the spotlight not just with A Quiet Place, Part II, which finally opens in Kiwi theaters on May 27, but with Disney’s Jungle cruise in July – two blockbuster releases that many hope will re-energize the struggling box office.

“It’s just gone crazy,” Blunt says. “We are on the other side [now], so I kind of feel optimistic. ”

A Quiet Place, Part II, Krasinski’s sequel to her critically and commercially successful 2018 sci-fi horror film, is the portrait of a family in crisis: after the loss in her husband’s first film (played by Office alun Krasinski), Blunt’s Evelyn Abbott must find a way to survive with three children in a post-apocalyptic world where terrifying creatures hunt humans by sound.

“The film is made for theaters, so I’m relieved and grateful that we’ve waited and been given the support to wait,” says Blunt. “Because I believe this is an event film, and I think to take full advantage of the experience you have of watching it in a theater.

“It’s weird that it’s about to come out and then it didn’t,” Blunt said. “But we just had to go out and wait for the right time. And I think John was always pretty sure he’d like this to be one of the first movies to hit theaters. It was still sort of what he wanted. “

“It’s definitely a weird circumstance to go through all the motions to release a movie and then have to put it back in the box,” Krasinski says. “But the truth is, as weird as it may be, it doesn’t hold a candle for all the other things everyone’s been through, so we just took things in stride.

One bright spot about the delay is that the film’s isolation themes and community value will likely resonate a lot more now. “I think it was pretty crazy to see what we were dealing with so clearly in this movie thematically happening very physically in the world a few months later,” Krasinski says.

“There are themes running through it: staying for yourself and not reaching out to your neighbor,” says Blunt. “So I think the idea of tiptoeing out into the big world probably resonates more with people now.”

Despite the success of the first film, the couple were ready to step away from the boom Quiet place franchise. “I don’t think everything should be sequential,” Blunt said in a separate interview in March 2020. “I think that’s why we got into the idea of one; we weren’t just not entertaining. the thought of it. ”

The couple knew the studio was planning to move forward with a sequel, whether or not they were involved, but they were strongly against revising the story until Krasinski had an idea for Part II ‘Kauai opening sequence with Blunt while she was in production for Jungle cruise.

“He says, ‘I have an idea of how I would open it if I did, but I’m not saying I would,'” Blunt recalls. “And I was a little careful. But he started to throw it and I just felt like my eyes were getting wider and wider. It was just undeniable.

“We’re very honest with each other. He always knows when I’m for real or not. So when he saw how stopped I was by this, it became pretty obvious that he was going to be there. ‘to write.

“I think that’s when I started to realize, ‘Is my snobbery turning into nonsense?’” She adds. “I wanted to be in that streak. I would like to make this movie whether it’s a sequel or not. I told him, ‘We have to approach this like somebody’s just turning the page – and that’s the sequel.’ And if you’re at all invested in this family, you’re going to want to see what happens to them. ”
