A playground in Rockbridge was set on fire on Sunday after an alleged arson attack involving two minors.
According to a report from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, at around 2 p.m. Sunday, the Greenfield Fire Protection District was dispatched by West Central 911 to respond to a fire located in the village community park in Rockbridge.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Greenfield Police Department were also dispatched to respond. Upon arrival, the entire park, which included playground equipment and outdoor recreation equipment, was on fire and was burning uncontrollably. The Greenfield Fire Department managed to extinguish the blaze in about an hour.
Shortly after the blaze was brought under control, Greene County Sheriff’s Deputies launched an investigation. It was learned that a 12-year-old and an 11-year-old who were in town visiting relatives allegedly set the rubber mulch on fire in the playground, which quickly got out of hand and ended by consuming the entire playground. .
According to the Sheriff’s Department report, the boys have been returned to the custody of their guardians and a report is being filed with the Greene County State Attorney’s Office to determine the appropriate criminal charges applicable in the case. Damage to the park has been estimated between $ 35,000 and $ 40,000. No injuries were reported in the incident.
