Angela Scanlon’s Wellness Routine Involves This Weird Wellness Gadget

In Chill Chat, Bustle sits down with celebs to discuss everything to do with wellness, from their favorite workout to their tips for getting a good night’s sleep. Here, presenter and podcaster Angela Scanlon reveals the strict rules she has for her phone, her recipe for a perfect bath, and the unusual wellness gadget she’s addicted to.

Angela Scanlon is obsessed with wellness. The Irish presenter tells me that she is an advertiser’s dream because she is ready to try just about anything. However, over the past 12 months prioritizing a personal grooming routine has meant more than just keeping up with the latest trends, she says.

“We talk a lot about self-care, and a lot of times it’s disguised as a petal bath, face mask and Instagram photo,” she tells me over the phone. “But actually, for me, it’s more about compassion on a daily basis. Usually, it’s the boring, Instagram-worthy rituals that you do, that only you know, that make you feel better.

Scanlon often discusses the most meaningful ways to maintain balance with guests on his podcast, Many thanks. Throughout the pandemic, she spoke to the likes of George The Poet, Fearne Cotton, Dawn O’Porter and Candice Brathwaite for all the things they are grateful for.

In April 2021 she started the ‘minipod’ series Thank you, more where his guests rethought a chapter in their life that seemed like a failure, but they are grateful for the moment. “I was obviously aware of practicing gratitude, but I started the podcast to force me to practice what I preach. I didn’t necessarily enjoy everything all the time, especially when the shit hit the fan, ”she says. “Being away from our whole family and all the uncertainty, I leaned heavily on it.”

Many thanks has become a community. Scanlon told me that when things looked dark, she asked his subscribers to share what they were truly grateful for. “In the grand scheme of things, these were quite small things. It would be a daily walk with the dog or a lunch in the sun, ”she says. “But this conscious shift in focus towards what we have, rather than what we lack, had a profound effect on me and allowed me to retain some semblance of sanity.”

Below, Scanlon reveals the drink that wakes her up in the morning, the face masks she swears by, and the best meditation technique for wandering spirits.

Matcha or coffee?

I am really sensitive to coffee. Anything after noon I’m up all night rock and roll. But recently, I really got into cocoa and herbal teas. Rather than having a coffee and running out, it’s now much more of my morning drink ceremony. It slows everything down and becomes a moment of pause.

If I feel wild in a cafe, I take a plain white oat milk, which I always end with an apology. This order is perfect if you are in London or in a big city. But when I get home you get a really big eyebrow raised.

What else is part of your morning routine?

When I work my morning routine will change, but I will still get up earlier to have that quiet moment. Before, I could sleep as much as possible. Now, I like to have a cup of tea and be up for a bit before I face the world.

Sometimes I will do a meditation. And I usually try to stay away from my phone before I set up my day.

I started taking a regular multivitamin, which I didn’t for a while either. I think I’ve needed it lately. I always take Wild Alaskan Fish Oil and use Better You Vitamin D Spray. My skin has been a little rough lately, so I have also taken Accumax.

Do you have a similar relaxation routine at the end of the day, wherever you are?

Yeah, I have to be really disciplined with my phone. It’s the only thing that interrupts my sleep. When I’m at home there’s a clear cut, but if I’m traveling and I’m alone then I’m probably more on my phone. I try to put it down an hour and a half before going to bed.

I have a very old alarm clock at home. I also have a quilted eye mask. It’s so important to me. Another thing that helps is that I am a big bather. I have my favorite bath products, and I’ll be there for a few hours.

Okay, what do you need for a perfect bath?

Bath salts, of course. I love Epsom salts or magnesium salts. I also cannot do without candles or incense. There is a brand of incense called Fenix, which I love. The packaging is beautiful, and they are totally durable and beautiful.

If I have been very busy, my first instinct is to take work in the bath, so I feel productive. In that case, I’m going to force myself to sit there with no work to do. Otherwise, I sometimes read my book or my Kindle. It’s just checking in with yourself and finding out what you need.

Less is more – but if I have flowers in the house that are on their last legs, I will remove the heads and scatter them too. It can be really pretty.

Are you a fan of face masks?

Yes! I really like the Olay Charcoal Mask because it’s in a pencil stick, and I can just put it where I need it. I also really like the Bliss Mighty Marshmallow Whipped Face Mask. If I want something quite special, I will go for the Sisley Black Rose Cream mask. It’s amazing and it smells so good.

It sounds delicious. Do you have a little more offbeat wellness tips?

I am absolutely obsessed with crystals. I have a growing collection and recently started taking a course to better understand them.

I also really like a gong bath. They were introduced to me a few years ago, and I’m getting more and more interested in them. They are basically meditation for the lazy. Just lie back and let the sound overwhelm you. You emerge feeling cleansed and vital – or drowsy.

Then there is my grounding sheet. You plug it into the wall and it balances you the same way it does when you go outside. It’s amazing and can give you a wonderful, deep night’s sleep. As you can see, I am a marketers dream.

When you are not on the ground, how do you find the balance? Do you have regular workouts?

No, you got me now. Exercise is the one area of ​​my life where I have struggled to find balance.

I dance vigorously enough to get rid of some energy, and I love yoga. I just started working with a yoga teacher called Sarah on Zoom. When I want to guarantee, she is there. She pushes me in the most considerate way.

I’m really interested in somatic healing, which examines how memories and emotions are stored in our bodies. I’m a big supporter of talk therapy, but if something’s stuck in your elbow or collarbone, I think it’s so good to really shake up the energy. He feels good.

And when I want to do that, I always put on Florence Welch.

How has your personal care routine changed over the past year?

Since confinement, I have managed to establish a routine, which I had never had before. Partly because of my work, and maybe because I resisted it a bit. I dove in and out of meditation for years, but during the pandemic I did it religiously.

Sometimes it can take five minutes, sometimes 50. Sometimes it’s guided, and sometimes it’s silent, and that’s fine. No matter what shape it takes, it’s just a matter of stepping back and turning inward.
